So, as a professional editor and proofreader, how can I help your company? Let’s look at the kinds of issues I can fix, how I would deal with them, and the value this would bring.

The problem

Many businesses, despite putting a lot of effort and money into their marketing, spoil it with sub-standard writing.

Why does this matter? For one thing, you need your audience to focus on the meaning of your message, without being distracted by awkward phrasing, misplaced punctuation or fluctuations in style. Anything that makes them read a sentence twice is usually bad news. On websites and in emails, especially, people easily lose interest if they struggle to absorb what they’re reading.

Also, errors won’t help your credibility. Poor spelling or grammar is often a turn-off for potential customers (more on this here and here). It can even damage your website’s search rankings, on Bing (directly) and Google (indirectly, at least – those Google people don’t give much away).

Other types of business writing – reports, proposals and so on – also need to be up to a professional standard if they’re going to be effective.

The solution

If you want your written communication to give the right impression of your business, it must be:
  • clear
  • concise
  • consistent
  • easy to read
  • well suited to your audience – whether that means your customers, your prospects, or your own staff or colleagues.
‘I hired Graham to proofread and edit some website content. The speed at which he got back to us was impressive, particularly taking into account the detail he went into. I would have no hesitation in recommending Graham to anyone who needs a reliable, detail-oriented professional!’
– Lee Tonge, CV Consultant and Founder of The CV Store
This is where my business editing service can help you. I can bring clarity and a sense of smoothness to your writing. I’m trained and experienced in the art of checking for errors, inconsistencies, ambiguities and wording that can be improved. I’ve edited many consultancy reports and other business documents.

Or, if you produce a published item in PDF form – a client magazine, for example – I can copy-edit the content before it reaches the typesetting stage, or proofread the near-finished product afterwards, just as I would do for a book produced by a publishing company.

Professional editing and proofreading can be a great help with things such as:
  • promotional material: website content, blog posts, brochures, leaflets, flyers, catalogues, product descriptions, fact sheets, guides, advertorials, press releases, mailshots
  • magazines, newsletters
  • business documents: reports, plans, reviews, proposals, bids, tenders
  • internal communication: training documentation, staff memos/emails.

As an Advanced Professional Member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), with its code of practice, I assure you that I’ll respect the confidentiality and commercial sensitivity of any material you share with me. I’ll gladly sign a suitable confidentiality agreement on request.

To learn about what I can do for you and how I would do it, please take a look at the What I do pages. (Please note: I don’t write content from scratch – for that, you’d need a copywriter.)

I can also help you to establish a consistent corporate style for your written material, by creating or enhancing a style guide.
