My fees are roughly in line with those typically charged by other trained editorial freelancers in the UK, and with the suggested minimum hourly rates published by the Society for Editors and Proofreaders. I believe them to be reasonable, while also reflecting the degree of skill that’s needed to do the work accurately and thoroughly, and the amount of time it takes. The fee for an editing or proofreading job depends on factors such as:
For style guide development, I’ll estimate the amount of work needed, and we can discuss whether to settle on a fixed fee or an hourly rate.
- the length, complexity and quality of the material you’re going to give me
- the type of work you need
- any style requirements
- any special requirements for the mark-up method, resolving queries, etc.
- scheduling.

Getting a quote
When asking me for a quote, please give as much of the following information as you can:
- your name and contact details
- your company, organisation or educational institution, if relevant
- a brief description of the document, book, etc., with a rough or exact word count
- its intended audience
- its format (Word, PDF, etc.)
- a sample of the content, or all of it
- the type of service you need
- any style guide to be followed, and any other special requirements
- the time frame: (a) when you would send the material to me for editing or proofreading; (b) the required completion date
- any extra help you’d like me to provide, such as helping you with resolving my queries.
If you ask me to start work, I will first need you to accept my terms and conditions and data protection policy (see here for a few notes on data protection).
When and how to pay
Unless we agree otherwise, I’ll send you an invoice after completing the work, and payment will then be due within 30 days. For large jobs, I might ask you to pay part of the fee in advance, and possibly ask you for intermediate payments.
You can pay via direct bank transfer, PayPal or cheque. For payments in currencies other than British pounds, I have an account with Currency Fair, which helps to reduce the exchange costs.
