After completing an additional training course in developmental editing in March 2024, I’m planning to review what I offer and my method of achieving it. I hope to be ready to offer the service again some time in May or June 2024.
When would a document assessment be useful?Before a document is handed over for detailed editing, it may well be useful to have it assessed at a high level. I can do this for you.
Otherwise, the editor may end up doing word-by-word checks on large chunks of text that really should be deleted or rewritten – it's more efficient if these are identified at an earlier stage. |
What does it involve?
Using my expertise and experience as an editor, I’ll review the document and give you a report. This will set out my findings and my advice on how you can improve your document in various ways, such as:
If the document is in Word format, I might also enhance the formatting and layout (for example, by using Word styles to ensure consistency). I normally won’t change any of the actual text, as the idea is that you will then take control of it again for a while before the full edit takes place, but I can be flexible about this.
- structure
- formatting and layout
- content, and its relevance to the reader
- language use, tone, clarity and flow
- reader engagement
- editorial style
- presentation of data, and use of figures and tables
- citations
- biased or insensitive language
- potential legal or ethical issues.
