Get a quote

Once you’ve decided on the type of service you’re looking for, the next step is to get the necessary details together and ask me for a quote.

Here’s a guide to what I’ll need from you.

For editing, proofreading or a document assessment

Fees for my work
Please give me as much of the following information as you can:
  • Your company or organisation (unless you’re working as an individual)
  • The type of service you need
  • A brief description of the item that needs to be edited, proofread or assessed
  • Its target audience
  • Its format (Word, PDF, etc.)
  • How many words it will have, at least roughly (including tables, captions, notes, references and anything else with text that I would need to look at)
  • Whether it will have any ‘special’ features that will need to be checked, such as tables, illustrations, notes and references; and if so, roughly how many of each
  • Any style guide that should be followed, and any other special requirements
  • The timeframe: when you would send the material to me, and the required completion date
  • Any extra help you’d like me to provide, such as helping you with resolving my queries
‘Graham has been regularly proofreading our monthly newsletters and other materials for ALCS for about a year now. We’ve always found him extremely professional, accurate and efficient.’
Jade Zienkiewicz, Content Editor, Authors’ Licensing & Collecting Society
Please also send me a sample of the content (or all of it), which should be fairly typical of the whole thing.

Then, I can decide whether I’m willing and able to do the work and, if so, estimate how long it would take. This will depend on things such as the length of the material, its quality and complexity, and the type of service you’re looking for. If I am happy to do it, I’ll give you a quote and make it clear what it includes. This will usually be a fixed fee, but in some cases I may suggest an hourly rate instead.

For style guide development

Please tell me:
  • Your company or organisation (unless you’re working as an individual)
  • What sort of written material the style guide will be used for
  • Whether you already have a style guide and need it to be reviewed, or you need a new one to be created
  • Any thoughts on what it should cover
  • The timeframe for the work

I can then make a proposal for the work to be done, the schedule and the payment arrangements.

Terms and conditions

Finally, if we come to an agreement, I’ll need you to accept my terms and conditions before I go ahead with the work.

If you’re ready to ask for a quote, or you’d like to find out more, here’s how you can get in touch.
